Mansfield Sports Recognition Awards – Club of the Year

It gives me great pleasure to let you all know the Club has won the prestigious CLUB OF THE YEAR at the Mansfield Sports Recognition Awards last night.
Thank you to all players, coaches and parents for supporting the Club and making this possible.
Also Steve was nominated for ‘Volunteer of Year Award’ and he was a shortlisted finalist.
After the award presentation we (myself and Steve) were interviewed by Radio Mansfield and that we will be making our ‘radio debut’ this Thursday (14th December) on Radio Mansfield (103.2FM) on the Craig Priest show 6 to 7 pm.
Thanks to all the players and parents that attended last night. (sorry could not invite everyone).
Nomination for Club of The Year:
Mansfield Junior Badminton Club has existed for 38 years providing a safe environment for children, boys and girls, to experience and enjoy the sport of badminton. Run by a small group of dedicated and appropriately qualified volunteers it aims to achieve the best from everyone through skill development and competition. ’Taster’ sessions have been run at primary schools to introduce the sport and provide a pathway for those who wish to develop and continue in the sport and also help sustain the club.

Membership is on the increase (57 currently) and players are encouraged to enter local, regional and national tournaments and leagues. Players also progressing to County Squads and national teams. Previous players include Chris, Shaun, Elizabeth -all England and GB internationals. Emily also played in The National Badminton League where she was runner up with Team Notts. About 15 players are involved in County teams.

Although a small club compared with some others, 2016/2017 has been a superb year of achievements in local and national competitions.

  1. The club entered teams in 10 of the 12 Nottinghamshire Leagues winning 6 and being runners up in the other 4

  2. Players have travelled far and wide to compete in national tournaments, returning with a collection of 41 medals – 11 gold, 15 silver and 15 bronze
  3. At the County championships the club was both a winner and runner up in 3 events  and runner up in a further 2
  4. At the Carlton and Attewell tournaments the club provided 8 event winners and a further 4 runners up
  5. Several players have been selected to play for Nottinghamshire in the National Leagues

Nomination for – Volunteer of the Year – Steve

Steve has been volunteering in badminton for over 10 years now.

He started off by helping at Mansfield Junior Badminton Club as a volunteer coach.

As well as continuing with this role he has now got involved:

  •  In organising and facilitating the Clubs League Fixtures (around 40 matches each season)
  • Confirming fixtures with other Clubs, selection of players, arranging transport, updating league results
  • In organising and getting Club Shirts for members – he keeps a range of samples for players to try and once chosen he sends this off for printing and getting back to the player with anew shirt.
  • As Notts Junior League Secretary (looking after the fixtures with 10 other Junior Clubs in Notts, updating results, sending out league tables to all Clubs, ensuring rules are being followed, collating all the match results, organising annual presentations and trophies for the Notts Junior League)
  • as a coach at Oak Tree Junior Badminton Club
  • in delivering  Badminton Taster sessions in Primary SchoolsSteve has increased his volunteering hours and is committed to the sport of Badminton.His personal reward is seeing that all his selfless contribution is helping the Sport, Clubs and youngsters to have greater achievements.

I have played badminton for 40 years and work in energy efficiency, mainly in schools. I am Chair of Governors at Flying High Academy Ladybrook, so have experience of Safeguarding to a high standard. I have a daughter, Emily, at the club and a 2-year-old son, Jason, who wants to join as soon as he can.
